Marmaris started off life, over 5000 years ago, as a tiny fishing village and has now grown into one of the largest and most cosmopolitan resorts in Turkey.

The resort can be divided into two parts; the Old Town and the Beachfront.

The Old Town, with its narrow, cobblestone streets and traditional Turkish style houses, is home to the bazaar, harbour and "Bar Street".

Marmaris is a shopper's paradise and a visit to the bazaar is a must! Whether it's a diamond ring, custom-made leather jacket or "genuine fake" designer clothing that you're after, the bazaar has it all. After a hard day shopping, stroll along the harbour and admire the "gulets" (traditional Turkish wooden yachts). At the end of the harbour is Netsel Marina, one of the largest marinas in Europe. Have a drink in one of the many bars and restaurants, and enjoy the stunning views over the bay. From there it's a short walk to Bar Street, which, as its name suggests, is home to many bars and nightclubs.

The Beachfront is the new part of the resort and over the past 25 years many hotels, bars and restaurants have sprung up along the shore. It's here that you'll find the Orkide Hotel.

You're spoilt for choice here when it comes to both eating and drinking out. There are restaurants catering for all tastes, from traditional Turkish to Indian food. When it comes to drink try the local Efes lager or a cocktail. For the really brave there's "Rakı", an aniseed flavoured spirit which is the national drink.

The Beachfront is also home to the "Atlantis Water Park", a great, fun day out for children of all ages, and "Talk of the Town", which plays host to the "Playgirls" or as they're more commonly known - 3 jocks in frocks!
